Behind the Craft
Bullish Designs began with a shared curiosity between Stephan and Nina — a desire to understand furniture more deeply, not just how it looks, but how it’s built, how it’s used, and how it holds up over time.
Before designing our first sofa, we spent time researching the industry from the inside out. We wanted to understand materials, construction methods, and the small details that make a meaningful difference once a piece becomes part of everyday life. That process shaped the way we think about furniture — and ultimately, the way we build it.
What became clear to us early on was that longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from deliberate choices: the thickness of the timber used in a frame, the density of the foam, the quality of the leather, and the care taken at every stage of construction. These decisions aren’t always visible at first glance, but they define how a sofa feels and performs years down the line.
So we chose to design and build our sofas ourselves.
Built with Intent
Every Bullish piece is crafted from the ground up using thicker, high-quality timber frames, higher-density foams that retain their shape, and premium natural leathers selected for their durability, character, and ability to age beautifully.
These materials are chosen not to impress on day one, but to stand up to daily living over time.
Just as important as the materials is the team behind them.
Our sofas are handcrafted in Cape Town by people we know and trust — makers whose skill, experience, and attention to detail we have complete confidence in. Being closely involved in the process allows us to stand behind every piece
we produce with clarity and assurance.
Letting the product speak
We’ve always believed that furniture should be experienced naturally.
Rather than presenting our sofas in highly styled or controlled environments, we wanted people to see how they perform in real life — how they wear, how they soften, and how they settle into a space over time. This thinking led to the idea of our working showrooms.
By placing Bullish sofas in wine farms and hospitality spaces, we allow them to be used daily in beautiful, relaxed settings. Clients are welcome to visit these spaces at their own pace, enjoy the environment, and experience the furniture without expectation or pressure.
These sofas aren’t untouched or pristine. They’re lived in. And that honesty is important to us.
It’s not a perfect presentation.
